Policies - Modern Slavery Statement
Statement period: Financial year ending 30 April 2026.
Modern slavery includes slavery, servitude, forced or compulsory labour, and human trafficking. Nkuku is committed to acting ethically and transparently and to preventing modern slavery in our business and supply chain.
Our business and supply chain
Nkuku designs and sells furniture, lighting and home accessories. We work with independent businesses, artisan groups, social projects and cooperatives, including long-standing partners in India, Vietnam and other sourcing locations.
Our supply chain includes raw material sourcing, craft and manufacturing processes, packaging, freight, warehousing and professional services. We recognise that risks can increase where work is informal, subcontracted, labour-intensive or difficult to see.
Policies and governance
Our approach is supported by our Human Rights Policy, Responsible Sourcing Manual and supplier requirements, whistleblowing arrangements, and Stakeholder Grievance Policy.
The Operations and Impact Director oversees our responsible sourcing and human rights work, supported by colleagues who select, manage and visit suppliers. Senior leadership reviews significant risks and actions.
Due diligence
Depending on the nature and level of risk, our due diligence may include:
- Supplier onboarding and risk assessment.
- Sedex and SMETA information where available.
- Visits by our UK and India teams.
- Questionnaires, document reviews and worker interviews.
- Supply chain mapping and monitoring of subcontracting.
- Corrective action plans and follow-up reviews.
Our priority risks
Our priority areas include child labour, forced labour and debt bondage, recruitment fees and identity document retention, fair pay, working hours, health and safety, migrant and contract labour, discrimination, and risks associated with informal work or unauthorised subcontracting.
See our fuller assessment of salient human rights issues and our mitigation measures.
Managing identified concerns
Where a concern is identified, we assess its severity and connection to our activities, agree corrective actions and monitor progress. We seek to put the interests of affected people first and support appropriate remedy. We may suspend or end a relationship where serious harm is not addressed or a partner is unwilling to improve.
Training and awareness
Relevant employees receive guidance on responsible sourcing, modern slavery indicators, supplier due diligence and escalation. We also use supplier engagement, conferences and training to communicate expectations and share practical improvements.
Measuring effectiveness
We monitor indicators including:
- Supplier risk assessments, visits and audit findings.
- Corrective actions, closure rates and recurring issues.
- Training completion.
- Grievances, reported incidents and remediation outcomes.
- Progress on traceability and oversight of subcontracting.
Next steps
We will continue to strengthen supply chain visibility, improve the consistency of risk assessment and corrective action tracking, build awareness among colleagues and suppliers, and review the effectiveness of our grievance channels.
