A good cake stand comes down to material and size. Solid mango wood, marble and ceramic stands are sturdy enough to hold cakes of most sizes, and a pedestal base lifts your bake so it becomes the centre of the table.
As a general rule, a cake stand should be 3 to 5cm wider than your cake. This gives the cake a balanced frame and stops icing or decorations catching on the edge. If your stand comes with a dome, check there’s enough height to clear the top of the cake.
A handcrafted cake stand brings character to a room even without a cake. Place one on the kitchen island on its own, or use it as a pedestal for cheese, fruit or bread. Beyond the kitchen, it makes a decorative riser for candles, plants or small objects, adding height and interest.
An open stand on its own won’t keep a cake fresh, but paired with a glass dome it shields the cake from air and dust, helping it stay moist for longer. Bakes with cream, custard or other perishable ingredients should always be kept in the fridge.
