Create a Christmas Table to Remember: A Festive Styling Guide with Claire

23rd December 2025

There’s something truly magical about Christmas. It’s not just the gifting and gathering, but the atmosphere that fills the day with warmth, familiarity and quiet joy. Among the many festive traditions, few moments are as treasured as sitting down for Christmas lunch or dinner with loved ones. And at the heart of that moment is the table: the place where stories are shared, toasts are made, and memories are created. Setting the Christmas table is more than just preparing a surface for food. It’s an act of care; a chance to create beauty, spark joy, and set the tone for the meal to come. In this simple tutorial, Claire shares her tips on how to design a table that feels festive, welcoming, and thoughtfully put together.

Begin at the Centre: Setting the Foundation

When styling your Christmas table, always start with the centre. It helps to ground the overall look and makes it easier to layer around. Begin by choosing a colour palette or theme, whether it’s traditional greens and golds or something playful and patterned. I like to begin with a Junto linen runner or tablecloth as a base. Its natural texture and gentle drape add warmth and softness without overwhelming the space. From here, I’m going to build the centrepiece using seasonal foliage, such as holly, eucalyptus, or even clippings from the Christmas tree. Instead of using a tall vase or statement arrangement, I suggest laying the greenery along the table. This allows you to add visual interest without obscuring conversation across the table. To add depth and a little sparkle, tuck a few baubles between the leaves, choosing ones in tones that complement your theme. Finally, bring in statement candle holders in varying heights to create drama and dimension. I prefer slimmer candles so that the light flickers gently without blocking anyone’s view, creating intimacy and atmosphere as the evening unfolds.

Tableware to Anchor Your Style

Once the centre is styled, it’s time to build each place setting, and the tableware you choose can completely change the feel of your tablescape. For a more playful, festive look, I recommend something with a subtle pattern like the Juniper Drop collection. Its hand-painted detailing adds character and a touch of fun. If your theme leans toward timeless and understated, a simpler set like the Valinha collection is ideal. Its gentle texture and organic form offer quiet elegance without competing with the rest of the setting. It’s also important to think practically: what are you serving? If you’re starting with bread or nibbles, set each place with a side plate from the start. And if you’d like to showcase your full place setting before the meal begins, go for it. Plates can always be cleared just before food is served, and the display makes a beautiful first impression.

Glassware that Elevates the Occasion

Drinks are part of the celebration, so make sure your glassware suits the occasion. Lay the table with hand-blown tumblers for water, ensuring each guest has a glass ready. For wine or fizz, choose glasses that complement the tone of the evening, refined yet relaxed. A well-placed jug of water is both practical and decorative. Whether your jug matches the tableware or the glassware, consistency in tone and material helps create a cohesive, styled look. And if you can't decide? Mix and match. A smaller jug that complements the tableware is perfect for gravy or sauces, while a larger one that echoes the glassware can take centre stage for drinks.

Finishing Touches that Make it Personal

What sets a truly special table apart are the little details that make each guest feel seen. Start with a thoughtful seating plan, considering where conversation will flow most naturally and where each guest will feel most at ease. Add a handwritten place card, slipped into a brass leaf holder, for a tactile and personal touch. If you’re feeling generous, a lovely idea is to leave a small gift or treat at each setting. It only has to be something simple, but this helps to make the meal memorable. The Tiny Kiko decorations or Karru mini stockings are ideal for holding a chocolate, a handwritten note, or a keepsake. These finishing touches spark joy even before the meal begins and help your guests feel truly welcomed.

A Table to Gather Around

At the heart of it all, a Christmas table is about more than aesthetics. It’s about creating a space that feels warm, generous, and full of spirit. It’s a place where food is shared, laughter echoes, and the season is celebrated in its fullest. With a little planning, a few carefully chosen pieces, and a touch of creativity, you can transform your table into something truly memorable. Whether pared back and natural or richly layered and festive, it’s all about setting the scene for connection and celebration. So, light the candles, pour the wine, and enjoy a meal surrounded by the people you love. Because in the end, it’s the atmosphere that lingers longest.
